Tika Sensei

GET TO KNOW YOUR TEACHER

Hi, I'm Tika Sensei! I was born and raised on Bali Island, Indonesia! I'm an island girl now stuck in a state with no beaches and long winters. I lived in Japan from 2017 to 2021, then moved to the USA, spending a year in Chicago before settling in PA. I speak four languages and am learning Korean. I'm still struggling with reading Hangul, but at least I can understand if someone swears at me, haha. I love using fun resources like Quizizz, Padlet and GimKit in my class. English isn't my first language, so sometimes I rely on my students for help with those tricky English words. There are three particular ones I always avoid saying in class: "Beach, Sheets, and Seat." I don't want to get fired guysđŸ€Ł

Now it's your turn!

PADLET ACTIVITY

Hey everyone! Let's make our class more fun by getting to know each other. Head over to our Padlet and share something about yourself. Feel free to leave comments on each other's posts and find friends with the same interests. Click the ↗ to open this Padlet in a new window.

Tips to Follow

How to Succeed in Japanese 1 Class

  • Dual Monitors: If you have only one monitor (your laptop), request an extra one from CCA through your homeroom teacher. Dual monitors help you follow lessons more effectively by allowing you to view shared screens and work simultaneously.
  • Headphones and Microphone: Essential for listening to audio and completing assignments that require recording, especially in high-scoring writing and speaking assessments. If you don't have one yet, you can request one for free from CCA through your homeroom teacher.
  • Dedicated Japanese 1 Notebook: Keep a separate notebook solely for this class to organize and retain important information, beneficial if you plan to continue to Japanese 2.
  • Colorful Pens and Highlighters: Use these tools to color-code notes, aiding in quicker understanding and retention of Japanese grammar nuances compared to using a single color pen.

Asynchronous Guided Instruction

Multiple Choises for Asynchronous Student

Some students prefer to learn at their own pace, which is okay. Here are your options for completing lessons asynchronously:

  • Edio Lesson: Complete these without skipping any questions.
  • Quizizz: You can access the Quizizz lesson through a provided link for asynchronous learning. Choosing Quizizz means you don't have to do the Edio lesson, but you must confirm your choice in Quizizz. If you don't finish, I'll reset it, and you'll need to do Edio. Submitting random, skipping questions or submitting irrelevant answers in Quizizz will require you to redo Edio for credit, as Quizizz offers fewer practice opportunities.
Regardless of your choice, if learning asynchronously, YOU MUST watch the recording. Important explanations and announcements may not be in Edio or Quizizz. For Japanese 1, watching the recording is crucial due to the language's complexity.

Assessment Point Weights

UNIT LESSON

In this course, your performance will be evaluated based on:

  • Participation: 35%LessonsKnowledge Check
  • Quiz: 20%
  • Test: 20%
  • Assignment: 25%
These weights determine how your progress will be measured throughout the term.

There are six units in this course:

  • Unit 1: Self-Introduction
  • Unit 2: That's Life!
  • Unit 3: At Our House
  • Unit 4: Physical and Emotional Health
  • Unit 5: We Shop
  • Unit 6: Time and Travel
Each of the UNIT has 3 Assignments, 1 Quiz, 1 Test

Be Respectful

Being respectful in our virtual class means treating everyone with kindness and consideration.

  • Listen attentively and value others' contributions.
  • Use kind and positive language.
  • Give everyone a chance to participate without interruption.
  • Respect privacy and follow class rules.
  • Support and encourage your classmates.

Use Technology Wisely

Translation Tool Policy

  • If you are caught using a translation tool for the first time, you will receive 0% credit for that assessment but will be allowed to retake it.
  • Using a translator tool for more than once requires a meeting with the teacher to discuss the issue. You will not be allowed to retake the assessment, and your grade will remain F 0%.
  • Using the translator tool more than twice will result in notification to the Assistant Principal, Principal, homeroom teacher, and parent. You will not be allowed to retake the assessment, and your grade will remain F 0%.
Differentiating between students who use translator devices or AI and those who answer independently is easy. Japanese grammar is unique and has different levels of complexity. Our lessons at CCA concentrate on specific grammar patterns and structures. If you use AI, translator devices, or seek external help, it will show in your work because these tools use different grammar patterns. Straying from the grammar structure taught in class will result in a grade of F 0% for the entire assessment. You can use your notes for help with grammar in open-ended questions, but please use the guided notes provided and not translator devices.

Using a translation device in answering questions is a violation of the rules at CCA.

Synchronous Guided Instruction

EdTool used in Tika Sensei's class

In our class, I rewrite the lessons to make them easier to understand, so I don't use edio for live lessons. If you join the live class, you'll participate in activities on EdTools like Quizizz, Padlet, GimKit, and Genial.ly. I mainly use Quizizz and Padlet, while GimKit or Blooket is for review games to help with vocabulary. I can see who participates and who doesn't, and I track your progress. This information may be shared with your parents, assistant principal, and homeroom teacher if needed. Let's make learning fun and successful together! If you prefer not to use these EdTools and would rather learn asynchronously using Edio alone, that's totally okay! Just let me know, and we'll make sure you have everything you need to succeed at your own pace. Let's find the best way for you to enjoy learning Japanese!

Keep it Positive

By keeping a positive attitude and supporting each other, we can create a welcoming and productive virtual classroom environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to learn.

  • Encouragement: Support classmates with praise and positive feedback.
  • Respectful Communication: Use kind and respectful language in chats and discussions.
  • Constructive Feedback: Politely share thoughts and offer helpful feedback.
  • Active Listening: Pay attention and value others' contributions
  • Collaboration: Work together, encourage teamwork, and help each other succeed.

Participate Actively

To make learning more enjoyable, join in discussions and activities actively.

  • Listen carefully
  • ask questions
  • share your ideas
  • work with your classmates
When you want to speak or help, use the Zoom hand-raising feature or chat. Wait for your turn before turning on your microphone to keep conversations smooth. Feel free to assist peers and keep conversations focused on school-related topics. If you have something unrelated to share, save it for our 5 minutes before or after class. Let's make our learning time fun and supportive for everyone!

Assessments

In this course, each unit has four assessments: a Topic Quiz, Language Lab, Unit Performance Task, and Unit Test. Your score depends on how many questions you answer correctly. Each question has a different point value. Writing and Speaking questions are worth the most, between 4-12 points each. Whether you complete the lessons live (synchronously) or on your own time (asynchronously), you must answer all questions before submitting the lesson. You cannot submit the lesson without answering the questions.

Weight of Each Assessments:

  • Topic Quiz : 20%
  • Language Lab : 25%
  • Unit Performance Task : 25%
  • Unit Test : 20%

Students who don't follow instructions will receive a message from me, and their parents will be notified.

Don't Take Grammar Notes During Clas

Why?

Taking notes while listening and participating can confuse your brain. Instead, focus on understanding the grammar concepts and actively participating in class activities, like chats or Quizizz practices. Ask questions and engage in discussions to better grasp the lesson. When to Take Notes?

  • When there's additional information not on the slides
  • After class
You'll have access to simplified lessons and Quizizz links, so you can review the slides later and take notes. This helps reinforce your understanding and allows you to organize and color-code your notes.

Why This Method WorksTaking notes during class can be confusing. Instead, focus on participating in discussions and creating sentences. This way, I can help you fix mistakes and learn better. Success Tip Students who got A+ to B+ used this method. It helped them understand their notes and the lessons better.

Be On Time

Our virtual sessions begin promptly at 2:20 PM. To ensure a smooth start and maximize our learning time together, please join the virtual classroom by 2:15 PM. This early arrival allows us to get settled and prepare for our lessons. During this time, feel free to engage in casual discussion before we officially begin. Opening multiple links and apps before class starts is necessary, and arriving 5 minutes early gives you ample time to do so. Let's make the most of our class time and enjoy our discussions!

Here are Some Fun Alternatives if You Don't Enjoy Tika Sensei's Class

Drop the Class

Stella Sensei and Austin Sensei's Class

I know Japanese can sometimes feel like trying to climb Mount Fuji with a backpack full of sumo wrestlers! If you’ve given it your all, used all the resources, and it still feels like you’re wrestling with the grammar and stuff, that’s totally okay. If you’re thinking about switching to an easier elective, just let me know! The only catch is you need to be rocking a grade above 60% so it doesn't show up as a "Withdrawal Fail" on your report. So, let's aim for that and then you can swap over to something that feels more like a breezy walk in the park!

If you find that my class isn't quite your cup of matcha but you're still excited to learn Japanese, no worries at all! Just let me know, and I'll happily transfer you to Austin Sensei or Stella Sensei's class. We have 2 more awesome teachers for Japanese 1, so you have the freedom to choose the class that fits you best. The lessons are the same, but the delivery and teaching style are different. Think of it like choosing between sushi and ramen, both delicious, just with their own unique flavors!
