Online Psychometrics and Personality Tests
Introduction
Psychometric testing measures mental capability and aptitude, differing from traditional testing that measures education, knowledge or skill. Psychometric testing has been around for well over 100 years. In fact, the first tests of this kind were developed at the University of Cambridge in the 1880s and have since featured during the world wars, being used as a tool to assess recruits for any neuroses. The tests administered back then were mainly personality tests, and the role that psychometric tests have taken on since then has drastically changed.

Why to use personality tests with students
Teachers can administer a personality test in class to help children discover their strengths and developmental needs. The driving force behind administering a personality test is to open up lines of communication and bring students together to have a higher appreciation for one another. A personality test can provide guidance to teachers of what teaching strategies will be the most effective for their students.
A personality test can benefit students by:
- Increasing productivity
- Getting along better with classmates
- Helping realize their full potential
- Identifying teaching strategies
- Helping appreciate other personality types
Testing reduces cognitive biases
Some elements that can distort an evaluation are the experience of the evaluator, cognitive biases (stereotypes, prejudices) but also a lack of self-knowledge of the person evaluated. Compared to traditional selection methods, psychometric tests provide key indices to facilitate decision-making, in an objective and non-discriminatory way.
