Digital Passport
The Department of Chemistry introduced the use of Moodle badges as part of their second- and third-year Chemistry ‘Digital Skills Passport’ initiative, which helps students identify and link laboratory skills acquired within the organic chemistry laboratory curriculum. Unique badges were designed for each of the technical skills and the criteria for the award of each badge were defined. In addition to attendance to the laboratory practical and submission of a laboratory report, the criteria typically included completion of pre-lab virtual laboratory simulations and online quizzes. Once the student successfully completed all the assignments linked to the criteria for a specific technical skill, the corresponding badge was automatically awarded. Feedback from the students indicated that the badges helped them recognise these technical and employability skills and enhanced their laboratory experience. Contact: Dr Trinidad Velasco Torrijos and Professor Frances Heaney, Department of Chemistry.
