HAVE TO - DON'T HAVE TO
Obligation - No Obligation
Have to + verb(infinitive) to talk about rules and obligations Have to expresses a necessity or requirement.
Examples
- Do I have to buy the new book?
- What time does she has to get up to go to school?
- I have to speak English at school
- She has to get up at seven every day
NOT Have I to book I've to go
We use “have to” for general obligations, such as rules at work / school.
HAVE TO - DON'T HAVE TO
Obligation - No Obligation
Don't have to + verb(infinitive) to indicates that something is not necessary. You don't have to go = You can go if you want to, but it's not obligatory / necessary.
Examples
- We don't have to use uniform at this school
- You don't have to go to classes on Saturdays
- Some museums are for free you don't have to pay for them
MUST - MUSTN'T
Strong Obligation - Prohibition
Must + verb(infinitive without to) to talk about rules and obligations Must is used to express a strong obligation or something very important
Examples
- Must I go to bed now?
- When must we decide about the party?
- You must go to bed after brush your teeth
- You must tidy your room before you go out
We use “Must” for a personal obligation.e.g a parent to a child
MUST - MUSTN'T
Strong Obligation - Prohibition
Mustn't + verb(infinitive without to) expresses sth is prohibited. You mustn't go = I'ts prohibited. Don't go
Examples
- You mustn’t touch the wet paint, it’s still drying.
- At the construction site, you mustn’t enter without a helmet.
- Visitors must not park in the staff car park.
we normally use mustn't for apersonal obligation ( one that speaker imposes)
