Players start with a token—which represents them—on the starting square and take turns rolling the dice. The pieces move according to the numbering on the board, in ascending order. If at the end of a move a player falls on a square where a ladder begins, he climbs up the ladder to the square where it ends. If, on the other hand, he falls into one where a snake's tail begins, he descends to the square where its head ends. If a player rolls a 6, he/she can move twice in a single turn. If a player obtains three consecutive 6, he must return to the initial square and will not be able to move his token until he obtains a 6 again. The player who manages to reach the final square is the winner. There is a variation in which the player, being six or fewer squares from the end, must obtain exactly the number that is missing to reach it and if the number obtained exceeds the remaining number of squares, the player will not be able to move.

If the player lands at the bottom of a ladder, he ascends to the top square where the ladder ends.
