In a species, organisms all have multiple similarities in morphological appearances. They can also reproduce and their offspring can also reproduce. Animals that are similar enough to be able to breed together to produce fertile offspring that are called a species.

We also learnt that the differences between organisms of the same species is called variation.

We also learnt that there are 5 kingdoms of organisms: animals (humans, animals etc), plants (oak tree, rose, cowslips etc), fungi (mushrooms etc), prokaryotes (viruses/bacteriaetc) and protoctista (a lot of viruses)

There are two ways in which variation occurs in organisms: genetic (DNA, mutation)and environmental (factors that are inhabited and influenced by your surroundings after birth).

biology: Dnaand inheritance

As UIVs in the sub-topic of Biology this year, we covered multiple topics. The ones to be drawn attention to in this simulation are: DNA and Inheritance and the Digestive System! Not like the McVite's biscuits...

The periodic table organizes elements by properties. Rows (periods) show electron shells. Columns (groups) show outer shell electrons and similar properties. Groups: 1: Alkali Metals - Very reactive metals. 2: Alkaline Earth Metals - Less reactive metals. 17: Halogens - Very reactive non-metals. 18: Noble Gases - Inert gases. Periods: Elements in a period have same electron shells. Across a period: Less metallic, more non-metallic. Categories: Metals: Good conductors (left/center). Non-metals: Poor conductors (right). Metalloids: Properties between. Atomic size: Increases down a group, decreases across.

We call the compounds in the atmosphere that trap Earth's heat, such as CO2 (carbon+oxygen) and methane greenhouse gases. They occur naturally but human activity has generated more of these. They now trap far too much heat, raising Earth's temperature and causing climate change. These melt glaciers and raise sea levels.

Chemistry:periodic table

Light transfers energy from one place to another as a wave. The light can travel through empty space (a vacuum)! Light travels at 300,000,000m/s (metres per second).Light is faster than sound. Materials can be translucent(allows some scattered light through), transparent(emitted fully) and opaque (not transmitted and is absorbed). It is reflected when light bounced off a surface, changing the direction of a ray of light. All objects reflect light. It hits the mirror (and this ray is described as the incident ray) and the ray of light that bounces off is known as the reflective ray,.

Physics

Physics was a DIFFICULT year for us in UIVth, but me and Emme's personal favourite science! The topics we will delve into and review in this great endeavour of discovery is Light .
