INTRODUCTION

We call "distress" the set of confused information and distorted reality that remains in the brain after experiencing an intense situation that has not been discharged and, therefore, neither processed nor stored adequately. This confusing information has a life of its own in our minds. It does not remain in our brains passively or harmlessly. In fact, it affects us profoundly, both consciously and unconsciously. This confusing information (distress) and its damages have certain common characteristics. Knowing their peculiarities and functioning is very useful to support us in our personal emotional work.
