Areas of Care

The health and care sector focuses on four distinct areas of care, and the NHS provides services within three of these. While some roles will be seen in more than one area, others may be specific to a particular area of care.

Tertiary care refers to highly specialised treatment, including neurosurgery, transplants, and complex procedures.

The first point of contact for most patients, including GP practices, community pharmacies, dentists and optometrists.

Secondary care tends to refer to hospital or community care. It provides specialist care, including planned operations and urgent and emergency care.

Social care is about providing support to people outside of clinical settings. It's about helping them live comfortably and independently.
