Community of Learners Model:
  • Collaborative teams can be based on content, grade-level, departments, or based on areas of focus, such as assessments and data, PBIS, recognition, or school cultute (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Learning community customize the PD to benefit the staff, students, and school
  • Growth occurs through collaboration meant to works towards solutions to needs of group focus
  • Activities: Community of Recognition works to celebrate students for upholdind school Values and Beliefs in the classroom and while outside of classroom. Members work to brainstorm ways in which each teacher can praise students in a way that is meaningful and intentional. Recognizing student cultures and identies inlcuded in weekly Monday Homeroom Video.
  • Advantages: Working with like minded members in a specific community, may assist progress of work rather than tackling many topics, focus is narrow, teams are self-directed, changes are longer lasting (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Disadvantages: Team members may not have time outside of school day to meet, varying ideas or points of view may delay progress, if group is too large it may slow success of work
Districtwide Professional Development Plan Model:
  • Most basic way for a district to implement a new initiative or innovation
  • Called the "spray paint method" and refers to hope that the information will stick
  • least effective method for learning theories or for work that needs multiple meeting time
  • Stakeholders are invested in ongoing planning to benefit students (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Activites: Keynote speaker presents to entire distrcit personnel in a large conference facility and presents strategies, data, insight, and concepts of a growth mindset. Speaker may ask for input from audience or for people to speak to their neighbor. The motivational presentation may have strong input, but not all present may grasp the main ideas.
  • Advantages: Entire district personnel are present to hear same information regardless of role in district, insight might offer different viewpoints that have relevence, motivation may spark further PD opportunites at individual school sites
  • Disadvantages: Too large of a venue may turn off listening or interest of personnel, lacks direct connection
Research Base for Professional Development Model:
  • Most powerful school improvement tool (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Requires a team of teachers who work with the same cohort of students
  • The teams works to address urgent concerns based on ongoing data analysis. Data can be collected from formative and/or summative assessments, as well as assignments
  • Based on data, the teachers use their expertise specific, measureable, attainable, and time sentaive goals are set (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Activites: Team teachers will meet one a month during Monday planning time to identify students who are in need of intervention or support based on data collected. Throughout the year, teachers with communicate with the student and parents. Counselors will be notified of goals and interventions for their support in inquiring about student interests. By the end of the year, the team with use data to identify areas of growth and areas still in need of improvement.
  • Advantages: Teachers can work collaboratively to create a plan that will support students academically and emotionally, teachers who have a stronger connection with the student may be able to offer insight into the student's academic strengths and learning gaps
  • Disadvantages: The team may not be able to communicate frequently to discuss changes in the goal, the student may not want teacher support and goals might not be reached
The Institure Day Model:
  • Focus topic is presented in one day and an expert or experts from an outside source or within district present to staff
  • Opportunity to teach and bring awareness to staff to initiate learning or change (Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • Various opportunities for teachers to learn by selecting sessions that appeal to them
  • Activites: District may offer a one-day PD on a Pupil Free Day and have teachers from other districts or presenters from outside companies like Kagan, Thinking Maps, or DBQ Project. Teachers can select from a variety of 90-minute sessions. Teachers would know in advance of selection options.
  • Advantages: teachers can select options that are important for their content, grade level, or need in the classroom, having other professionals offer trainings allows all teachers to place themselves in learing mindset
  • Disadvantages: Teachers may opt to not attend or be open to learning from presenters outside of district, presentations may not meet needs of teachers
Site-Based Professional Development Model:
  • This form of PD is the building level for school sites and is more responsive to the needs and goals of the whole staff
  • In order for this model to be effective, a long term plan must align with district and state requirements and goals(Fogarty & Pete, 2017)
  • The goals and parameters are set based on demographics and academic needs of school
  • When all stakeholders are invested and are willing to create a community of learners, the process of setting goals and having a beneficial strategic plan is obtainable
  • Activites: At the beginning of the year, the Instructional Leadership Team meets with the administrators and counselors to identify the areas of need to focus on for the year in the area of Staff culture, student culture, and academic culture. The ILT will work to identify steps in which to improve the the needs for the three areas. During department meetings, ILT reps will continue communication and relay details from monthly meetings
  • Advantages: regular and ongoing communications between teachers and administration will create a higher buy-in from teachers, needs of students and staff are vocalized in small group and whole staff meetings for transparency
  • Disadvantages: Funding to make dramatic changes in programs and initiatives may be limited
