The Colonial Legacy
Arrival of African Americans
Lawyers were primary professional slaveholders and multiple enslaved people worked for 1 person yet individually were owned by another
There was a lack in economic activities which forced labor onto the enslaved & were isolated for profitable trade
Enslaved people made up the majority of the population due to cotton & sugar production
The American Slave Trade
The state of Bexar County hardly had any reports from, very few, enslaved people . In fact, there was a higher demand of enslaved individuals depending on the occupation of their owners. Despite their newfound freedom African Americans still faced numeroud discriminations.
Economic violence & Abuse
Curfews were imposed and punishments followed if curfews were broken. Auctions were held and seperated families. Then patrols were implemented due to the fear of riots from the enslaved yet it was quickly abandoned afterwards.
Day of Jubilee
Emancipation was granted on August 13, 1865. This led to many to move into cities which drastically declined the city's population. Yet former enslaved people still faced many inequalities. Not until 30 years did they witness any form of change.
