Providing consistent interactions with students constructs a learning environment that students find relatable from class to class. Providing opportunities to one student, but not all, can be perceived as not caring about the academic performance of all students.
Be consistent in your interactions with students
Strategies for Engaging Students with Respect
Listen to students’ questions so that you answer their concerns and not your perceptions, or expectations, of their inquiries. Do not engage in words or actions that embarrass or belittle students.
Listen to your students, and respond in a constructive manner
Students appreciate when you know their names and use them in class instead of just pointing at individuals. Using your students’ names is perceived as an indication that you care about their presence and wellbeing in the class.
Learn the names of your students.
If you make promises to students or changes to the course, be sure to follow through with whatever you said you were going to do. Your students need to know they can count on you.
Keep your word.
Come prepared to class. Coming to class ill-prepared signals to students that you do not value their time and learning needs. It also tells them you are not prepared and creates an environment of chaos and misbehavior ensues.
Be prepared and act confidently in class.
Students will occasionally frustrate you and may even test you. Respect and concern for students means treating them as equals, and not disparaging them, even if their actions are inappropriate.
Show patience with your students.
A significant factor for building respect is how you treat others. As instructors, you can establish a class environment of respect and concern by engaging students as emerging young professionals in your field. Connect their learning to job skills
Treat students as emerging professionals.

High leverage practices including the PLC at Work system will be used to improve our Tier 1 instruction to increase growth and proficiency include: Short cycles of instruction model to regularly assess and adjust teaching strategies based on student performance. Teachers will provide reteaching to all students not showing mastery after Tier 1 instruction. Train teachers in data analysis and interpretation to inform their instructional decisions. MTSS and BIT will work together to ensure students have access to Tier 1 instruction, high quality Tier 2 instruction, and the data driven problem solving process to move all students toward higher levels of proficiency. RtI at Work Solution Tree will be the format for our short cycles. All grade levels have built in intervention and enrichment time daily for math and ELA. The leadership team discusses building data to move resources as required by student need. PLCs meet weekly to discuss data, plan short cycles, create common formative assessments, review HLP work, and ensure our proficiency at Tier 1 is increasing. Priority Standards will be used as the focus for short cycles. The priority standards will align with the WYTOPP blueprint. All standards will be taught but select standards will be targeted for short cycles. CFA work will continue to ensure our assessments align with the DOK required to show proficiency on WYTOPP.
We will focus on increasing enrichment opportunities for students. To build enrichment, we will implement the following: Independent study, interest centers, differentiated instruction, peer learning, and discuss the extension activities more consistently and systematically during PLC meetings to ensure students who have met the learning criteria are challenged during intervention time. These strategies will allow all students opportunities to have individualized instruction and grow according to their individual needs. Providing students with systematic researched strategies will allow teachers the time to prepare materials ahead of time through intentional planning. Discussing these strategies during PLC time will allow teacher teams to create activities with input from multiple perspectives.
