Institute Day Professional Development Characteristics
Effectiveness
Institute day professional development is the most common within districts (Fogarty, 2017). This is when the whole district comes together to hear the same presentation at the same time.
Institute day can be effective when the whole district needs to know the same information in the same manner (Hopping, 2014).
Advantages
Disadvantages
Example activities
One advantage is you can utilize an expert in the topic to deliver the information (Hopping, 2014). Most experts require payment to do talks, having it as an institute day means more people can hear from the expert for the same cost.
The biggest disadvantage with institute day is not everyone has a chance to ask questions, or get personal help if they are not understanding the topic (Fogarty, 2017).
Include in the whole group instruction with small group activities, create pair/share questions, or have a group make mind maps or graphic organizers (Hopping, 2014).
Districtwide Professional Development Characteristics
Effectiveness
Having training take place over several days is better for retention of information (Fogarty, 2017).
Districtwide development is usually done over a few days instead of just one (Fogarty, 2017). Everyone gets the same training across the district.
Examples of activities
Disadvantages
Advantages
One activity you can do is a book study, This can be used during the whole year to help grow and implement new techniques (Hopping, 2014).
It is not sufficient training without being grouped with coaching and practice time (Fogarty, 2017).
This can be implemented through out the whole year, to continue to learn and grow on the new information (Fogarty, 2017).
Site-Based Professional Development Characteristics
Effectiveness
Site-based developments are most effective when you have teacher and staff input as to what needs to change, you must have a strategic plan in place for what trainings the year will hold (Fogarty, 2017).
Site-based development is training at the building level and can enhance school wide initiatives (Fogarty, 2017).
Advantages
Disadvantages
Examples of Activities
You can focus your trainings on exactly what your school needs to change or fix that are specific to you (Fogarty, 2017).
Schools have a small budget for professional developments, this can make it hard to get in experts for a lecture or buy materials to implement the changes (Fogarty, 2017).
Mind mapping all the things we want to see changed in our school. Creating posters for the school on the school wide discipline plan.
Communities of Learners Characteristics
Effectiveness
Each group can focus just on what they need to know and can become experts at their level and can address current needs based on the group of students (Fogarty, 2017).
Community of learners also known as PLC's or professional learning communities are all about specific goals for the individual group (Fogarty, 2017).
Advantages
Examples of Activities
Disadvantages
You can have several different groups based on the development needs, grade levels, leadership, cross curricular (Fogarty, 2017).
If learning groups do not feel comfortable together, they may have difficulty sharing their thoughts and concerns with the group (Stewart, 2014).
Some activities can be to examin data to find the greatest need in the grade level, or creating common lessons that the whole group can teach (Stewart, 2014).
Individualized Professional Learning Plans Characteristics
Effectiveness
Individualized Professional learning is about what the teacher needs in order to be recertified or to become a certified teacher (Fogarty, 2017).
Individualized plans are great because teachers can choose what they are interested in and learn more about it, they have lots of choice over thier development (Fogarty, 2017).
Examples of Actvities
Disadvantages
Advantages
Teachers can create a specific plan that is geard toward earning other certifications or endorsements on their certificate (Fogarty, 2017).
When doing Individulized learning, teachers can create action research plans to conduct in their classroom. This can show growth of what they are learning in their own trainings (Fogarty, 2017).
The biggest disadvantage is that most schools do not pay for these trainings that are outside of school, teachers must pay for them out of their own pocket (Hopping, 2014).
