The Importance of Communication in Relationships

Effective communication helps to build strong relationships. Some friendships require deep, constant, and regular communication, while others may require shallow communication that only happens occasionally. Even in these latter situations, it is important that friends actively listen to each other and express themselves freely and clearly.

Different types of friendships

  1. Reciprocal friendships: Solid friendships between people who are equals with a shared sense of loyalty and commitment. They can withstand external changes such as geographic separation or fluctuations in other commitments such as work and childcare.
  2. Associative friendships: Mutually pleasurable relationships between acquaintances or associates that, although positive, lack the commitment of reciprocal friendships.
  3. Receptive friendships: Include a status difference that makes the relationship asymmetrical. This relationship is more like that of a supervisor-subordinate.
