Consequence of

Colonization in modern times

"Artificial States"

The Effects of Colonization: How it Happened and How it Still Continues:

  • In the article above, the author talks about how colonization isn't just a thing of the past, as countries are still affected by the damage that the colonizing country left behind.
  • The author says that "colonialism typically resulted in unstable "artificial states" and directed the nation's entire infrastructure—roads, rail lines, and communication lines—towards the extraction of resources for the colonizer's benefit.
  • Here the author refers to artificial states as the colonized country, which was used by the colonizing country as an extra state.

How does colonization affect modern independent countries that used to be colonies?

  • The countries that used to be colonies of other cultures tend to be actual countries on development, and on the other hand the colonizing countries are now first world countries.
  • This shows that the colonization leaves a long term impact on the colonized country, as after its independece, native people does not have the capabilities, knowledge or preparation to rule, or as the author of the article says "how to keep the nation state-going".
  • After the nation became independent, the nation’s correspondence and position with the international world is still afected. Colonialism left the independent nation unprepared to function on modern global terms and is left vulnerable to outside influence and pressure.

What is Neo-colonialism?

Neo-colonialism

Neo-colonialism, is described as the continued influence and interference of more powerful states in the domestic affairs of less powerful, formerly colonized nations, according to Campbell et al. (2010). And despite gaining independence, the nations remain unprepared to function within the modern global system and are affected by outer pressures and influence. This manifests through mechanisms like free-trade agreements or development plans. Consequently, indigenous populations face dispossession and eviction to accommodate global capital's interests, illustrating that the nation-state continues to experience exploitation and control by outer forces under disguise of international policy.

Brief analysis of the effects of colonization in my country

México-Spain

In the past mexico was a colony of spain, but as time went past, mexico got its independence. Mexico was left with multiple damages, such as exploited resources, incomplete infraestructure, and also social ones, as Mexico continued in war within its own people, leading to a bad management of the country. Just as mentioned in the article. Also, being colonized by spain left behind its traditions on Mexico as it modified the peoples culture and religion, leaving few indigineous people.
