Cells

01

Plant cells

What are cells?

  • All living organisms are made of cells.
  • You can only view a cell under a microscope.

Animal cells

What is the function of mitochondria?

Contains genetic information and controls the cell’s activities

Option 4

Where respiration happens and produces energy from food

Specialised cells

03

They are disc shaped, which gives it a large surface area to carry more oxygen.

They are really small so that they can move through tiny blood capillaries to reach all cells

No nucleus so it can carry more oxygen

Contains haemoglobin to carry oxygen

Red blood cell

Layer of mucus and lots of cilia (tiny hairs) to trap bacteria/dust & move it on

Contains mucus to trap bacteria and dust and cilia helps moving it up back to our mouth

Ciliated epithelial cells

Dendrites, which branch even further into dendrites. The dendrites receive incoming nerve impulses from other neurons.

fatty (myelin) sheath that surrounds them - increases the speed of the message

Axon is very thin, and can be more than 1 metre long.

Communicating with other cells, generating electrical impulses

Nerve cell

  • Found at the top of the leaf (plant)
  • Where photosynthesis takes place
  • Contains lots of chloroplasts
  • Transparent

Palisade cells

Elongated shape increases surface area so that it can absorb more water and minerals from the soil

To absorb water and mineral ions from the soil

Root hair cell

04

Cells, tissues and organs

  • A group of similar cells, which all work together to carry out a particular function.

Tissues

  • Made up of several different kinds of tissue, working together

Organs

  • A set of organs that all work together to carry out the same function

Organs system
