7 Essential Skills for Literacy
Start
Teaching literacy is not an additional task, because literacy skills are used in all content areas. Every teacher must be a teacher of literacy.
- Physical Education: Skill demonstrations, journaling, or analyzing fitness plans
- Math: Solve the quadratic equation x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0 using the quadratic formula.
Locate the Main Idea and Supporting Details
- Science: Summarize data from labs and other learning experiences
- Social Studies: Summarize primary documents, historical articles, research projects.
Compose a Summary
- Physical Education: Verbal cues and prompts for skills
- Art: Vocabulary journals, and art critique
Interpret and Apply Academic Vocabulary
- Math: Estimate answers to see if they make sense, or figure out the pattern in a sequence of numbers.
- Science: Create scientific scenarios and reading comprehension with scientific texts

- English/Language Arts: Analyze text structure, and use graphic organizers
- World Language: Act out scenarios depicting event and consequence
