Teaching literacy is not an additional task, because literacy skills are used in all content areas. Every teacher must be a teacher of literacy.

Locate the Main Idea and Supporting Details

  • Math: Solve the quadratic equation x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0 using the quadratic formula.
  • Physical Education: Skill demonstrations, journaling, or analyzing fitness plans

Compose a Summary

  • Social Studies: Summarize primary documents, historical articles, research projects.
  • Science: Summarize data from labs and other learning experiences

Interpret and Apply Academic Vocabulary

  • Art: Vocabulary journals, and art critique
  • Physical Education: Verbal cues and prompts for skills

Identify and Apply Inference

  • Science: Create scientific scenarios and reading comprehension with scientific texts
  • Math: Estimate answers to see if they make sense, or figure out the pattern in a sequence of numbers.

Identify and Understand Cause-Effect Relationships

  • World Language: Act out scenarios depicting event and consequence
  • English/Language Arts: Analyze text structure, and use graphic organizers

Identify and Understand Relationships using Compare and Contrast

  • ELA: Compare and contrast themes, characters, ideas, and literary devices.
  • Math: Comparing numbers and operations, mathematical concepts, and problem solving strategies.

Delineate and Evaluate Arguments

  • Art: Analyze artwork to understand the artist's message or argument.
  • Math: Break down proofs step-by-step to understand conclusions, and evaluate different ways to solve problems.
