- When you are ready to answer, raise your hand.
Identifying problens and designing solutions
Work in pairs: - Decide what the problem might be - Design (draw) a solution - Present your ideas to the class

Plan the future of your country
Since your country is new, it is not economically successful at the moment. Most facilities such as education and health are very basic while others such as roads and public transport barely exist. An American oil company indicated that in your country, there might be large reserves of oil. As a gesture of friendship, you have been offered $500 million, inaid by the European Union. You and your team are determined to invest this money in the best way possible to improve living conditions for the people of the island. There are various possibilities. You must decide how you want to invest the money. The only condition is that if you decide to invest in airports, for example, you must build 2, as indicated. You cannot decide to build only one for half the cost. Discuss with your group and decide how best to spend the money.
- 2 airports: $120 million
- 3 hospitals: $100 million
- 7 tourist hotels: $80 million
- 25 health clinics: $90 million
- 30 primary schools: $100 million
- 2 universities: $50 million
- 5 cargo ships (for transport): $32 million
- 100 fishing boats: $85 million
- American oil company: $40 million
- New parliament building: $30 million.
- 500 km of new roads: $10 million.

Students work in pairs or small groups. Click on the 'clues' button so they can complete the table. 10-12 min approx.
Since you're here you could stay a bit longer and make new friends.
The island is inhabited by highly-evolved apes, who dominate everything. The apes are very grumpy and don't like visitors. .

- I think it would be better... don't you think so?
- What do you think about...?
- What else could we use?

Click on the 'eye' icon for an extra activity related to the video
Students must work in pairs and come up with ideas fo the new country following the list. Remind them to write long sentences following the examples on the slide. Check vocabulary (e.g, currency) If they don't know how to work on it, share with the class some ideas from other countries (traditions, food...) When time finishes ask for volunteers to go first and present their country.
Click on the 'eye' icon to check the answers. These are covered with a blue square that you can drag to see the answer. First, ask for volunteers to reveal one category so everybody has the opportunity.
Drag the square to see the image. Check their notebooks to see that they had the same idea.
In groups of 2 or 3. They have to agree with the option to choose in 10 seconds.
Hand out worksheets A and B for each pair. For TP students do the same, send them half of the story (A or B) and their partner in class will also (try) and shout the parts over the microphone. TP student does the same over the speakers. If there are no TP students you could cut up the parts and ask them to connect them together with paperclips. When time is over, ask each team to stop. Then, go to the next slide to check the story order
You could help them by eliciting words related to each deparment. Encourage them to discuss using the phrases in orange
Play 2- 3 minutes of the video and if there's time at the end, they can watch the rest.
Use the wheel decide to nominate someone to pick a number and then, use it again so each group presents their plan. Allow 2-3 minutes for each challenge so they discuss their plan.
There aren't dangerous animals but there is a very strong storm every eight hours that destroys any structures and leaves everything soaking wet.

03:00
While they discuss the questions, the teacher walks around for later feedback (allow them 2-3 minutes for the discussion). Then, check the answers with all the class. Ask sts if this is a problem here in Spain/Galicia/Santiago/where they live
This activity can be done as a whole class brainstorm. Ask students to raise their hands when they come up with some ideas.

Remind them to use the phrases below the instructios so that they practice the second conditional clause.
Use the wheel decide to nominate someone to pick a number and then, use it again so each group presents their plan. Allow 2-3 minutes for each challenge so they discuss their plan.
Students ask each other the questions while the teacher walks around for later future. When time is over, use the wheel decide to nominate and ask some students.
Go to the next slide to see the challenges. Each number contains a challenge. They work in pairs for the next part.
You can nominate members of the team so they tell you the part of the story which corresponds to each number (e.g., what goes in number 1?.) Click on each square to reveal the answer.

whole class activity write on the board ideas that they mention.
Teacher walks around the classroom to check they do the task and use the red phrases. When time finishes, teams present their ideas.
The teacher asks for volunteers or uses the wheeldecide to choose the first student.
When time is over, ask for volunteers to show and explain their design. Repeat the same procedure with the following slides.
Allow them around a minute so they make their choice. Then, click on the small 'eye' icon to do the second part of the worksheet. The second part should last approximately 3:30- 4 minutes in total. Instructions are included there.
Students work in pairs. Tell them they need their notebooks and pens to draw the solutions. The next slide shows an example of what the activity looks like. Draw their attention to the fourth square so they identify the situation and the problem and the connector used ('but'). You can do the first situation as a whole group so they undrstand what they have to do.
It looks like your items weren't good enough...
