Project Based Learning (PBL)
Project based learning is a teaching strategy that involves students gaining knowledge and skills on a specific topic and presenting an end product that demonstrates their knowledge. Students work on their topic and product for an extended amount of time, at least one week up to a semester. One primary goal is to provide real life application to learning.
Disadvantages
Advantages
Can be difficult for teachers to create. Time consuming, at least initially to create project, benchmarks, and rubrics.
Works best in Science and Social Studies due to context but can be cross curricular.
While gifted students could thrive with this style of learning, differentiation could be hard for all students, including those with learning disabilities.
Allows for formative and summative assessmets throughout the process.
Allows for student collaboration, creativity, engagement, and critical thinking. Can also give students a choice in final product.
PBL takes time and patience to learn to make it most engaging and beneficial to students.
