CAREER MENTORING

An Internship is school-focused and may last a semester or a year. This work-based learning is worth CCA Graduation credit. An Externship is industry skill-focused and also worth credit. A level-up would be a Pre- or an Apprenticeship.

Similar to Co-Op but based on the CCA Independent Study Template, Work-Study allows younger, working learners to use work experience and hours to earn Graduation credits. Alignment to PA Standards for various credit types.

Allows Seniors or Spring-Semester Juniors who are working to use work experience and hours to earn Graduation credits. MUST align to intended Career Pathway and PA Standards for various credit types.

When they align to career interests, volunteer experiences can be very helpful in completing Act 158 and finding a career. Learners should consider the wide range of career options in non-profits.

Spend an hour or two gaining exposure to a career or work site to get a sense of the position, lifestyle, education/training, daily tasks, skills needed and advce.

Career Mentoring is one, six-hour experience, which may span several days with an employer mentor.

DEFINE

Job Shadowing is three separate, three-hour experiences for a total of nine hours.

SAT Sections & Scoring

The SAT is similar to the ACT in that postsecondary schools and colleges use SAT data to determine admissions. SAT is an aptitude test which measures the potential learning capacity of students. The assessment is called the SAT Reasoning Test because it is possible for learners to "reason" their way to the right answer, even if they have not learned specific material in school. The overall score from all sections may qualify learners for Act 158. Learners may also "superscore": quilting together section scores from more than one test date/score report. If learners cannot test at CCA, they may register for the SAT near their home by going to www.collegeboard.org.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Admission into CCA’s CHS or Career Program does not guarantee admission to a participating postsecondary institution. A copy of the student’s high school transcript will need to be sent to the college(s) they apply to through this program. The appropriate transcript release documents are part of the enrollment process. Postsecondary institutions may restrict enrollment in courses based on class size, availability, prerequisites, and may deny enrollment based on their own criteria. Students should work with the partnering postsecondary institution’s Office of Disability for any questions or accommodations needed based on 504, IEP, or English Language documentation. This looks different in the postsecondary setting from the high school environment; eligibility for services and supports is determined through the requirements of agencies outside of the school system. CCA can assist students in self-advocating for support: If learners need additional assistance, please reach out to your Special Education teacher. Courses are subject to change with little notice, these are based on the availability of the postsecondary partner’s resources. Any changes will be communicated with families through edio tiles, emails, and the partner’s methods of communication (emails, LMS postings, etc.). Students should check transferability of credits earned through CHS courses or career programs with the institution(s) they plan on attending after high school. This information can be found by contacting the admissions office of the postsecondary school a student wants to attend after graduating from CCA.

Grade questions or concerns should first be directed to the postsecondary/program advisor and then follow up with the appropriate CCA staff on the Career Readiness team. WHAT TO EXPECT

  • There are many benefits of Dual Enrollment (tuition discount, car on campus, housing, earlier scheduling).
  • You can engage in “a la carte” or “combo” offerings: some students elect to choose CHS courses in which they are interested, while others enroll in programs comprising several courses in progression toward a credential.
  • Our partners have Learning Management Systems (LMS) that are different than edio.
    • The ON-BOARDING ORIENTATION and How-To Guides are very important for account set-up and log-in.
    • Knowing the amount of work, reading, and testing expectations (including preparation skills) is vital (a 3-credit course usually requires about 10 hours of study per week).
    • Weekly requirements, deadlines, what success looks like, and accessing support will be covered. (Many courses are virtual asynchronous, which means no real-time zoom or in-person instruction unless you request it!)
    • Your grades will be reported in edio so your circle can support you.
  • Note: CCA prides itself on flexibility, however, external partners may require adherence to firmer deadlines. This may impact retakes, resets, and due dates.
  • You can substitute CHS and Career Readiness credits for CCA Graduation credits, depending upon your program.
  • Transfer of postsecondary credit varies from institution to institution.
  • If you plan to take multiple postsecondary courses, transferability of credit is eased
  • FERPA Expectations: Parent rights and expectations of student initiative and independence
  • Additional 504/IEP/English-Language supports and how to access them
  • Withdrawal Procedures:
    • Within 2 weeks: no impact to CCA transcript
    • After 2-week drop/add: a W will be issued
    • The transcript (e.g. GPA) may be impacted by retaking the same course
  • Costs: As long as learners have met the requirements for enrollment, there should be no cost to CCA families (including books, fees, kits—CCA fully covers the cost of Concurrent Enrollment). If you ever receive a bill or invoice, contact the Career Readiness Department immediately.

  • Either synchronous or asynchronous, depending upon the program and/or provider.
  • Vary in availability and duration by semester, school year, and each respective postsecondary institution.
