Where was Chinatown?
City leaders wanted to move Chinatown to Hunter's Point. It was a rough area, full of polluted trains and ships. Many years later, African Americans would be forced to move to this area of San Francisco when their houses were taken over by the city.
Where did city leaders want to move Chinatown?
Chinese were not allowed to live anywhere in San Francisco. Instead, they were forced to live in the small area that has become known as Chinatown. Chinatown was concentrated onto two very small blocks of San Francisco nearby downtown. It was considered very valuable land.
Chinatown was only 2 blocks!
As more Chinese immigrants arrived, streets became narrower as buildings expanded. As you can see in this picture, rooms have been added to the top floors extending over the street.
Shops and businesses were on the lower level. This is where many Chinese worked.
