How Learning Occurs/ Types of Learning
Role of Memory
Memory in this context is a mediated process, shaped by social interactions and the use of cultural tools, reinforcing that cognitive development is not merely an individual endeavor but a collaborative process (Wheaton et al., 2024).
How Does Learning Occur?
Learning occurs through social interactions, where individuals engage in collaborative dialogues and activities with more knowledgeable others. This process helps learners internalize knowledge and skills (Wheaton et al., 2024).
Learning Best Explained....
This theory is particularly effective in explaining language acquisition, cognitive development, and learning within cultural contexts (Wheaton et al., 2024).
Role of Memory
Memory is externalized and stored within digital networks, which learners access as needed, allowing for continuous and just-in-time learning (WGU, 2021).
Major Characteristics of Sociocultural Learning Theory:
Sociocultural learning theory posits that cognitive development is deeply embedded in social interactions and cultural context. Vygotsky introduced key concepts such as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which highlights the potential for learning with guidance, and scaffolding, where support is gradually removed as learners gain independence (Wheaton et al., 2024).

Connectivism Theorists
George Siemens and Stephen Downes
Connectivism emphasizes the role of networks and digital technologies in the learning process. Knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and learning involves navigating and forming these connections. It highlights the importance of integrating various information sources through technology (WGU, 2021).
Connectivisim Learning Occurs...
Learning occurs by recognizing and traversing the network of information. It is about making connections between disparate pieces of knowledge found within a learner's personal network, facilitated by digital tools (Govindaraju, 2021).
Types of Learning
Connectivism is best suited for learning in digital environments, continuous learning, and knowledge management, particularly in contexts where information is rapidly changing and vast (WGU, 2021).
Characteristics
of Adult Learning Theory
Adult learning theory focuses on self-directed learning in adults, leveraging their prior experiences. It emphasizes problem-centered learning that is relevant to real-life situations and encourages practical application (Govindaraju, 2021).

Memory's Role in
Adult Learning Theory
Memory in adult learning is experiential, drawing heavily from past experiences to inform new learning. This experiential memory enhances the application and retention of new knowledge (Allen et al., 2022).

How Does Learning Occur?
Learning is driven by self-direction, relevance to personal and professional life, and problem-solving activities. Adults are motivated when they see the applicability of content (Govindaraju, 2021).
This theory effectively explains professional development, lifelong learning, and skill acquisition, where learners are autonomous and self-motivated (Allen et al., 2022).
