Stormwater Conveyance System
Click on the plus icons to learn more about the steps that can be a part of a stormwater conveyance system. All systems can vary and might not match this representation exactly.
Rain/Snow
During a rain or snowstorm, water falls on homes, lawns, streets, sidewalks and other surfaces. Any water that is not absorbed by the ground picks up contaminants as it moves across the ground and is considered runoff.
Stormwater Runoff
Runoff is directed to storm drains through curbs, gutters and drainage channels.
Storm Drains & Inlets
Storm drains and inlets are designed to catch runoff and channel it underground and downstream, preventing erosion and flooding above ground.
Treatment Measures
As the runoff moves through the conveyance system, treatment measures, such as rain gardens, bio-swales and wet ponds, intercept stormwater to treat it before it enters the piped conveyance systems.
Underground System to Local Waterways
Underground pipe systems and channels move the runoff to outfalls and local waterways.
