Polyvagal theory

The polyvagal theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is a neurobiological theory that explains the functioning of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and its role in emotional regulation.The Polyvagal Theory proposes that our physiological state influences our range of behaviours and significantly influences the way we experience the world around us. In simple terms, our nervous system, apart from conscious perception (called neuroception), has a significant impact on the way we perceive and move through the world.

The benefits of a regulated nervous system are numerous and include:

  • Improvement of mood and emotional balance;
  • Increased creativity;
  • Hormonal balance;
  • Improved digestive function;
  • Reduction of stress, anxiety and overwhelm;
  • Improved sleep and physical recovery; and
  • Increased overall resilience.
The theory highlights the importance of the vagus nerve in regulating social engagement and emotional states. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is responsible for controlling involuntary bodily functions, such as heart rate, digestion and respiratory rate. It consists of two branches: the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).

In this activity, you will be immersed in an exciting digital escape room designed to explore the characteristics and details about the Polyvagal Theory. As you solve puzzles and overcome challenges, you will discover important information about the Polyvagal Theory. In total there are three missions and after completing each one, you will receive a number.Gather all numbers to unlock the final price!
