1 Historique

Kendo signifie "la voie du sabre" (Do : la voie et Ken : le sabre) C'est un art martial japonais. C'est une sorte d'escrime pratiquée autrefois par les samouraïs. Son origine remonte au 16 ème siécle. Le Kendo a été connu en France dans les années 1950. Les personnes pratiquant le kendo se nomment des kenshi ou kendoka.

2 Equipement

Le Kendo se pratique avec une armure (bogû) et un sabre en bambou appelé Shinaï. Le kenshi porte un keigo -gi (veste de kimono) et un hakama (sorte de pantalon plissé).Sur sa tête il met un foulard appelé tenugui pour retenir la sueur. L'équipement est bleu, et parfois blanc pour les femmes

3 Les combats

Le kendo se pratique dans un dojo. Le kenshi doit frapper avec son shinai, tenu à deux mains, l’une des quatre cibles autorisées : le men (casque), les kote (gants), le dō (plastron ventral), et le tsuki (bande de cuir qui protège la gorge). La frappe se réalise avec le dernier tiers seulement du shinai. L'attaquant doit aussi pousser un "kiai" cri symbolisant son engagement dans l'action.

Un combat dure 3 à 5 minutes. Il débute quand l'arbitre crie "Hajime" (commencez) Le 1er combat qui marque 2 points (ippons) a gagné.

4 Profil du kendoda

Au Japon les enfants peuvent s'exercer dès l'âge de 4 ans. En France on peut commencer à 7 ans. Les champions internationaux sont généralement âgés de 25 à 35 ans. Les hommes comme les femmes peuvent pratiquer. Les entrainements et les combats sont mixtes.

4 Profil du kendoka

Le kendo développe la maîtrise du corps, la synchronisation. Il faut être persévérent, maîtriser le kendo prend de très longues années. Le kendo permet de mieux gérer le stress, et de prendre confiance en soi. Il se pratique dans le respect les uns des autres. L'entraînement commence et se termine par une méditation (mokuso) et chaque combat commence et se termine par un salut.
