Depending on the available resources, additional members may serve as course builders responsible for building the course in the LMS, as well as editors who proofread content, instructional materials, and student-facing documents.

The model of collaborative course development fosters a culture of partnership and teamwork among instructional designers, subject-matter experts, multimedia designers, and other development team members. In this model, the faculty member's role transitions into that of a content developer or subject-matter expert, while the other team members work closely with the faculty to develop a comprehensive online course. With the consultation-centered model, a faculty member can take the lead in designing and developing a course with the invaluable support of an instructional designer. The faculty will primarily focus on creating course content and building it in the learning management system, while the instructional designer will provide valuable assistance in ensuring that the course is aligned and that the instructional materials, activities, and assessments are of the highest quality and accessible for all online learners.
