Assume/Assess
ROUTE MAP
Oh no! You've been captured and are being held hostage! Your only chance of escape is to make it past The Sacred Bird River Pass and the Man Eating Dragon King. Fail to escape them means certain death!
The Sacred Bird
River Pass
Man Eating Dragon King
Do you have what it takes to escape!?
The Sacred Bird
There's no turning back now!
continue
See Handout Example AThe diagram shows skid marks. There is no mention of any avoidance maneuvers in the narrative. The skid marks were coded as positive indication of braking. Is this an assessment or an assumption?
This is an assumption
This is an assessment
continue!
You need more than one correct answer to escape me!
This is an assumption. It depends where the skidding was. skid marks on a diagram do indicate braking. if the skid marks were before the first harmful event, this would indicate an avoidance maneuver. If there isn't enough information to determine where the skid marks were, do not assume they were part of an avoidance maneuver.
See Handout Example B
nO, THIS IS ASSUMING
yES, THIS IS ASSESSING THE MATERIALS
"vehicle 1 left their lane for unknown reasons, crossed the center line and struck vehicle 2 in vehicle 2's lane. VEHICLE 1 STRUCK THE FRONT OF VEHICLE 2 WITH THE rear oF VEHICLE 1." THE DIAGRAM SHOWS BOTH VEHICLES IN THEIR FINAL RESTING POSITIONS. IS IT CORRECT TO CODE THAT VEHICLE 1 was not tracking FOR PRE-IMPACT STABILITY?
continue!
yOU BEAT ME AGAIN. dON'T WORRY, THIS NEXT ONE WILL BE YOUR DOWNFALL.
yES, YOU WOULD BE USING ALL OF THE CASE MATERIALS TO ASSESS THAT IN ORDER FOR VEHICLE 1 TO STRIKE VEHICLE 2 WITH ITS rear, VEHICLE 1 HAD TO lose control and ROTATE. IT WOULD BE AN ASSUMPTION TO GUESS WHICH WAY THE VEHICLE ROTATED, HOWEVER. wE CAN ASSESS THAT THE VEHICLE DID ROTATE BUT WE CAN NOT ASSUME WHICH DIRECTION IT ROTATED.
VEHICLE 1 RAN OFF THE ROAD AND ROLLED OVER MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST ON ITS ROOF.THE CODER CODED THE TOP AS DAMAGED. IS THIS CORRECT BECAUSE THE ROOF MUST HAVE DAMAGE OR IS THIS INCORRECT BECAUSE THIS IS AN ASSUMPTION?
THIS IS AN ASSUMPTION
tHIS IS AN ASSESSMENT
continue!
oK, YOU ARE GIVING ME A RUN FOR MY MONEY. i'M GOING TO NEED TO STEP IT UP.
tHIS IS AN ASSUMPTION.WHILE IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THE VEHICLE DID HAVE TOP DAMAGE, IF THE OFFICER DIDN'T INCLUDE THIS INFORMATION IN THE CASE MATERIALS, IT CANNOT BE CODED.
THIS IS AN ASSESSMENT
THIS IS AN ASSUMPTION
VEHICLE 1 WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH WHERE IT WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN A FLAMES. THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN THE CASE MATERIALS. FOR DAMAGED AREAS, IS IT ASSUMING OR ASSESING TO CODE ALL AREAS AS DAMAGED?
continue!
YOU'RE SMARTER THAN I GAVE YOU CREDIT FOR.
tHIS IS AN ASSESSMENT OF THE MATERIALS. tHE VEHICLE WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. tHIS IS INDICATION THAT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE RECEIVED DAMAGE.
correct assesstment
incorrect assumption
For unknown reasons, vehicle 1 ran off the road and struck a tree with the driver side door. Vehicle 1 then caught fire. the officer left the damaged area field blank on the crash report. The coder coded damaged areas as all areas for this vehicle. Is this a correct assestment or an assumption?
continue!
correct!this is an incorrect assumption. With fires, terms 'englufed' indicate all areas were damaged. However, just indication of a fire does not indicate all areas of the vehicle were damaged by fire.
yOU MAY HAVE ESCAPED THE FIRST OBSTACLE bUT DON'T CELEBRATE TOO QUICKLY. YOU STILL HAVE QUITE A LOT TO DOIN ORDER TO FULLY ESCAPE
THE GODS BLESS YOUWITH THIS OFFERING
that is incorrect.you were unable to escape this time!Better luck next time!
ROUTE MAP
Congratulations! You've passed the first trial! Continue along to path to the next challenge.
The ballgame
The river pass
In order to escape, you have to traverse the river. There are multiple stepping stones to get across, just make sure you don't fall in!
continue!
InCorrect. This is an assumption
correct. This is an Applicable assestment
Vehicle 1 was found crashed against a group of trees the morning after a severe snow storm. The road was completely snow and ice covered when the discovery was made. The coroner was able to determine the driver's time of death occurred during the peak of the snow storm. due to the roadway surface conditions, there were no signs of any tire marks or possible avoidance maneuvers. is it correct to code that the critical event for this vehicle was a loss of control situation due to the poor road conditions during the storm?

this is an assumption!
While it is possibly very likely that this person went off the road due to the severe weather conditions, it is also equally likely they fell asleep or had a medical emergency.Without having more information, this would be coded as the vehicle traveling off the road on either the right or the left side. This is all the known information that we have for this crash.

incorrect. this is an assumption.
Correct. This is an applicable Assestment.
A pedestrian was struck at 01:27 hours in an unlit section of the roadway. The pedestrian was wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the crash, as noted by the ems report. Is it acceptable to code the non-motorist as being not visible to the driver?
2/3
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consecteteur
continue!
this is an assumption
In order to code non-motorist contributing circumstance 19 (not visible [dark clothing, no lighting, etc.]) this must be specifically mentioned by the officer. by making this decision ourselves, we are making an assumption that the officer did not indicate themselves.
This is an assumption.
This is an assesstment.
see handout example b
3/3
vehicle 1 was changing lanes when they struck the pedestrian in a crosswalk. the diagram shows the lead up to the crash. Is it acceptable to use the diagram to say that the vehicle was tracking prior to their first harmful event?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consecteteur
continue!
this is an assetment
Diagrams can be used to help assess, along with the rest of the case materials what the vehicle was doing leading up to the crash. If the officer doesn't indicate a loss of control in an otherwise detailed diagram, this would be correctly assessed to be tracking.
You've passed the second door. You're much tricker than i initally expected.
THE GODS BLESS YOU WITH THIS OFFERING
Oh no! You fell in and drowned!

correct. This is an assesment.
There was a crash between a motor vehicle in transport and a parked motor vehicle. The transport vehicle fled the scene.is it correct to code that the driver of the hit & run vehicle did was not ejected during the crash?
continue!
This is an assumption. Regardless of the severity of a hit & run crash, don't automatically assume that the vehicle occupants weren't ejected. similarily, don't assume any hit & run drivers are not injured. look for this information in the case materials or code not reported or unknown as required.
Vehicle 1 was negotating the left hand curve when for unknown reasons, the vehicle went off on the right side. The driver steered to the left, the vehicle started rotating and slid across the roadway back off the left side of the road. Is it correct to assess the driver's steering maneuver as an overcorrection for driver related factors?
This is an assumption
This is an assessment

Remember to read each attribute remarks when coding to know what each element/attribute requires.
Be careful! Some elements require the officer to tell you something rather than you assessing the material. This is an example of that. While the narrative does seem to indicate an overcorrection, this attribute requires the officer to make this assessment.
