B2 first for schools - Use of English
Part 3 - Word Formation
In the Word Formation exercise, students are given a text with gaps and a base word in capitals. They must transform the base word to fit the context of the sentence grammatically and meaningfully. This part assesses knowledge of word families, including the ability to form nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs from a base word.
The gap follows "a very," which typically precedes an adjective. The base word "SUN" needs to be transformed into "sunny."
"It was a very (1) ___ (SUN) day, and everyone was feeling happy. The children were playing (2) ___ (CHEERFUL) in the park while the parents watched them."
The gap follows the verb "playing," indicating the need for an adverb. The base word "CHEERFUL" needs to be transformed into "cheerfully."
Practice 1 - group
Tips:
- Identify the part of speech needed for each gap (noun, verb, adjective, adverb).
- Use common prefixes (un-, re-, dis-) and suffixes (-ment, -ly, -able, -ness) to form the correct word.
- Be mindful of spelling changes, especially with irregular forms (e.g., happy to happiness, decide to decision).
- Re-read the sentence to ensure the transformed word fits grammatically and contextually.
