The Artist

France, 1869-1954 Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draftmanship. He was one of the main painters in the Fauvism movement, that uses colour to express feelings and emotions. He loved nature, animals, music and dance.

Pointillism

Pointillism is a style of painting that involves using dots in different colours to create an illusion or form. In many ways, Fauvism was an extension of pointillism, as the movement was defined by vivid colors and rough, short brush strokes.

Biomorphic shapes are found in nature. These shaoes may look like leaves, flowers, clouds -thinfs that grow, flow and move. Biomorpohic shapes are often rounded and irregular.

Fauvism

Fauvism is the name given to an art movement that took place in the early 20th century. It is known for its strong colours and brushwork. Matisse and other Parisian artist began to use flat areas or patches of colours instead of three-dimensional sapce. Fauvist artists were derogatorily named Les Fauves. It means 'wild beasts'.
