hierarchy

In a Midsummer Nights Dream

Start

What is Hierarchy?

  • A system in which members of an organization or society are ranked according to relative status or authority.

In both Shakespeare's time and the setting of AMSND, there was a strong and rigid hierarchy

We see hierarchy all around us; in workplaces, homes, political systems and our school

Hierarchy are neither good or bad in and of themselves; they add order but can be tools for prejudice

Hierarchy is represented all through out AMSND

For a long time in history, and still somewhat today, we lived in a heirachy where women were considered lower than men

For example we see the Mechanicals having a much worse life than Theseus

Helena and Hermia are considered objects, rights and prizes throughout the play, due to a mysoginistic hierarchy

For example

This is a clear example of people being treated differently and living different lives due to who they are, in ways they can't change.

THE TEST OF DOOM

Examples of Hierarchy

The Mechanicals live a much worse life with less money and less privileges than those above them just because they were born that way.

The fairies must follow the king and queen showing that they are below them in the hierarchy of the green world/ fairy kingdom although its percieved as a 'free word'

Hippolyta listens to everything Theseus says even though she doesn't want to, showing she is under Theseus in the hierarchy.

Hermia is expected to obey her father in regards to who she can and can't marry although she has a lover of her own (Lysander)

People come to Theseus' court to help make a judgement or decision together yet he has the final say over anything

Charaters and Hierachy

Athenian court

These are at the top of the Athenian heirachy, consisting of royals and nobles. However even within this rank there is further heirachy; the women constantly struggle to take their decisions into their own hands

the mechanicals

As far as the characters we know go, the mechanicals are the lowest of the low. They are constantly shunned by both Athenian Court members and fairies, but even within themselves there is a power struggle betwixt Bottom (lead role and self proclaimed actor extrodonaire) and Quince (director). This fight for scraps of power is innately humorous.

fairy Kingdom

The fairy kingdom acts as an escape from hierarchy for the lovers, but it has a heirachy of its own, with Oberon at the top and Titania fighting for power.

Is Hierarhcy always bad?

"hIERARCHY IS INHUMANE"

Something we often hear or are taught or misunderstand is that hierarchy is inherently bad. But it is very rare for us to consider the what if. What if hierarchy is actually good? Now obviously, it isn't. So the question we are asking is, always. Is it always bad? I would go on and explain how it maintains order and disipline but I'm sure you are all subconciously aware of that. However, Jordan Peterson has a different take on the benefits of inequality and hierarchy, let's watch to find out.

Quote Investigations

Quote 1

  • One of the first times we see examples of a hierarchy is near the beginning:

"And, my gracious Duke, be it so she will not here, before your grace, consent to marry Demetrius." (Line 38)

  • This quote shows hierarchy as Hermia ( a young woman) is getting no say and the more powerful / higher up leader ( Theseus ) is controlling the 'lowers' such as Hermia. There is also another example of patriarchy which is a form of hierarchy because someone is being treated differently because of who they are. Egeus ( a man with power ) is controlling Hermia ( a young woman) by not letting her speak because at the time, it was believed that a daughter had to follow whatever her father commands.

Quote 2

  • We also see hierarchy when Theseus speaks to Hermia:

"To you your father should be as a god; One that composed your beauties, yea, and one To whom you are but as a form in wax By him imprinted, and within his power To leave the figure or disfigure it." (Theseus, Act 1 Scene 1, Line 47-51)

  • This shows hierarchy by illustrating the authority and power fathers wield over their daughters in the patriarchal society of Shakespeare's time. Theseus' words to Hermia establish her father, Egeus, as a god-like figure with the ultimate control over her fate, likening her to a form in wax that he can shape or destroy at will. This metaphor not only emphasizes the father's dominance but also highlights the submissive and powerless position of the daughter within the familial hierarchy, reflecting broader social norms that prioritize paternal authority and male governance over women's freedom.

Quote 3

  • Two consectutive quotes that show hierarchy in the 'green world' include:

"Tarry, rash wanton! am not I thy lord?" (Oberon, Act 2 Scene 1, Line 63)

"Then I must be thy lady: but I know When thou hast stolen away from fairyland, And in the shape of Corin sat all day, Playing on pipes of corn, and versing love To amorous Phillida." (Titania, Act 2 Scene 1, line 64 - 68)

  • In this line, Oberon asserts his dominance by referring to himself as Titania’s "lord," a term that implies authority and control. His question challenges Titania to recognize and submit to his superior status within their relationship and the fairy realm. This assertion underscores Oberon's expectation that, as her husband and king, he holds a higher position and the right to command her.
  • Titania’s response initially acknowledges her role as his "lady," which could be seen as a subordinate position within their hierarchical structure. However, she immediately challenges his authority by accusing him of unfaithfullness, thereby undermining his moral authority and right to command her. By confronting him with his misdeeds, Titania resists his dominance and asserts her own agency and power within their relationship.

Bridge Thearte Adaptation of a Midsummer Night's Dream

One interesting adaptation of a midsummer nights dream is the bridge thearte adaptation of a midsummer nights dream. In this play there are two major differances. One of these changes is not uneque to this play, being that the same actors play oberon and theseus, and hippolyta and titania. The second, bigger, change is the fact that Oberon and Titanias roles are swapped. This means that Titania puts love juice in Oberons eyes and he falls in love with Bottom.

This is interesting beacause it turns the patriarchal society on its head, with the normally powerful Oberon suddely thrown to the Whim of magic and Titania becomes the most powerful fuiger in the play. This supports the theroy of the fairy woods being Hypollitas'dream as the main error with this theory is that in a dream, people see things they want and it is unlikely Hippolyta wants to be subdued.

You can watch the full play at the bridge thearte website.
