Timeline
Union troops led by General Grant infiltrated the Confederate interior and took control of rivers and railroads. This slowed down the Confederate supply chain, which led to a Union victory. This battle also marked the largest number of casualties in a single battle: over 13,000 dead for the Union and more than 10,000 for the Confederacy.
