To talk about permission in the past, we don't usually use a modal verb. Instead, we use WAS/ WERE ALLOWED TO + Verb (infinitive) I was not allowed to enter that room (No tenía permiso para entrar en esa habitación).

CAN (not) / COULD (not) / MAY/(not) MIGHT(not)+ Verb (Infinitive) May I go to the toilet?(¿Me das permiso para ir al baño?)

HAD TO+ Verb (Infinitive) I had to study till I was 14. (Tuve que estudiar hasta los 14 años)

MUST + Verb (Infinitive)- obligación que te pones túHAVE TO + Verb (Infinitive)-obligación que te ponen You have to wear a helmet in motorbikes. (Es obligatorio usar casco en motos).

DON'T /DOESN'T HAVE/NEED TO + Verb (infinitive) I don't have to bring the books (No tengo que traer los libros- [es opcional])
