Forming Questions with "To Be"

Structure using the verb "To Be":

To Be + Subject + Complement

Variants:Am I...? Are you...? Is he...? Is she...? Is it...? Are we...? Are they...?

Examples: Am I early? Is she a teacher? Are they ready?

Do/Does + subject + base verb

Forms: Do I/you/we/they play...? Does he/she/it play...?

Affirmative Structure:

  • Yes, + subject + verb.
    • Yes, I am.

Negative Structure:

  • No, + subject + negative form of verb.

Forming WH Questions

Common WH Words:

Structure with "To Be":

Forming WH Answers

  1. Understand the WH question word: Each WH word asks for specific information.
  2. Identify the main verb: Look for the main verb in the question to know what action or state is being asked about. This helps you know what kind of answer is needed.
  3. Provide the specific information:
    • Who: Answer with the name or a description of a person.
    • What: Answer with a thing, an action, or a piece of information.
    • Where: Answer with a place or location.
    • When: Answer with a specific time, date, or moment.
    • Why: Answer with a reason (often starting with “because…”).
    • How: Answer with a description of the manner, method, or state.
  4. Keep it simple: Your answer should directly respond to the question. Use a complete sentence to make it clear, but don't add unnecessary details.
