Born in West Africa and brought to America as a slave around age 7.Purchased by the Wheatley family in Boston who provided her with education. Despite being enslaved, she was encouraged to write and publish poetry.

Lived as a privileged settler in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.Born in England and migrated to America in 1630. Came from a well-educated Puritan family.

Anne Bradstreet is often regarded as the first published American poet.Phillis Wheatley was the first African American woman to publish a book of poetry. Bradstreet's Puritan beliefs permeate her poetry. Wheatley's work often reflects her Christian upbringing and worldview. Bradstreet navigated the hardships of colonial life.
