WHEN WE use it?

To emphasize situations or describe consequences of extreme situations

Using SO

Form: So + adjetive/adverb

Purpose: Emphasizes the quality described by the adjetive or adverb

Examples of SO

  • "The movie was so interesting."

(emphasizes how interesting the movie was)

  • "She runs so quickly."

(emphasizes the speed of her running)

Using Such

Form: Such + noun phrase

Purpose: Emphasizes the noun phrase

Examples of Such

  • "It was such a beautiful day."

(emphasizes the beauty of the day)

  • "He is such a talented musician."

(emphasizes the talent of the musician)

Then we have so/such...( that ). That describes the consequences of extreme situations.

Using So ... ( that )

Form: so + adjective/adverb + (that) + result

Purpose: Describes the result of an extreme situation caused by the quality.

Examples of So ... ( that )

  • "The test was so difficult that many students failed."

(the difficulty of the test caused many students to fail)

  • "She spoke so softly that I couldn't hear her."

(the softness of her speech caused me not to hear her)

Using Such ... ( that)

Form: such + noun phrase + (that) + result

Purpose: Describes the result of an extreme situation caused by the noun phrase.

Examples of Such ... ( that)

(emphasizes the beauty of the day)

(emphasizes the talent of the musician)

Additional tips

When using "such" with a singular noun, remember to include the indefinite article "a" or "an." Correct: "It was such a good book." Incorrect: "It was such good book."

The word "that" in these constructions is optional, especially in spoken English. With "that": "He was so tired that he fell asleep immediately." Without "that": "He was so tired he fell asleep immediately."
