Adult Learning Theory: What is it?
By Albert Gastaldo
Malcom Knowles
Malcolm Knowles developed the adult learning theory. Knowle argues that adults learn differently compared to children. Instead of focusing on pedagogy (child-centered curriculum), adult learning should be centered around andragogy. These principles have shaped how adults are taught.
Five Principles
- Adults can direct themselves to learn.
- Adults learn things based on their experiences.
- Adults have a readiness to learn to prepare for their life.
- Adults learn to fix an issue.
- Adults learn through their own self-motivation.
Why this Matters?
Adults learn at a different pace and rate compared to children. Pedagogy cannot be used to teach adults since that is a curriculum designed for children. There needs to be some andragogy strategies used to facilitate adult learning. Adults learn content using different methods. By focusing on pedagogy for adults, it implies that adults' time and professionalism is not respected.
Strategies
1. Find content to focus on something that maters to adults. Adults are motivated based on material that matters to them since they are intrinsitcly motivated .2. Allow for adults to have leadership roles to problem solve. Adults love to lead others and solve problems for situations that matter to them.
