After 700 years of Moorish occupation, Iberian societies needed resources and wealth. All of that could be achieved by expansion beyond their own shores. Most of this took place in the Americas and Africa. Pope Alexander VI interceded to maintain peace.

• Line drawn at approx. 45 degrees W longitude; sliver of Brazil remained east of the line - eventually applied to what is today the largest country in South America

• West of this line, Spain had control
• East of this line Portugal had control
• Greater influence of Portugal in Africa (and not Spain)

Iberian Territoriality

This set of maps and photos display the territorial markers that were used to divide the "world" between two political powers: Spain and Portugal. These two countries occupy a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic known as Iberia. In the 15th C., the Spanish and Portuguese begin colonization. This was partially in response to the expulsion of the Moors (Ottoman Turks) from the Iberian Peninsula after 700 years of occupation. There were some lasting impacts of Moorish society that diffused beyond Iberia. Hover over this window to see what some of those were.
