For those of you doing GCSE French next year - we are going over the absolute essential things you need to know in order to be successful in GCSE French. Most things you already know so this is just a refresher, and will prepare you well for Y10/11. For those of you not doing GCSE French – this will be a helpful recap for any future use of language. It is also helpful to remind yourself of grammar points that you can apply in English.

      Why?

      les adjectives

      • Most ADJECTIVES, for example, colour, go AFTER the NOUN they DESCRIBE
Par exemple: Le chien noir or Les cheveux bruns
      • However, most ADJECTIVES expressing: Beauty, Age, Number, Goodness and Size = BANGS are placed BEFORE the NOUN
Par exemple: La bonne fille or Les petits pains
      • In French, ADJECTIVES must agree in NUMBER and GENDER with the NOUN they DESCRIBE. For FEMININE NOUNS, ADJECTIVES add an “e”, unless the ADJECTIVE already ends in a silent “e”.
Par exemple: petit becomes “petite” in the FEMININE
      • For plural NOUNS, add an “s”, unless they already end in “s”.
      Par exemple: Les petits chiens

      Rule

      Grammaire

In French, certain adjectives change form when placed before a noun that begins with a vowel or a silent "h". This adjustment is made to ease pronunciation and avoid awkward sound combinations. The adjectives that follow this rule are:beau (beautiful) changes to bel.nouveau (new) changes to nouvel.vieux (old) changes to vieil.Examples:Un bel appartement (A beautiful apartment): Here, "appartement" begins with a vowel, so "beau" changes to "bel".Un nouvel ami (A new friend): "Ami" begins with a vowel, so "nouveau" changes to "nouvel".Un vieil homme (An old man): "Homme" begins with a silent "h", so "vieux" changes to "vieil".This rule only applies in the singular masculine form.

Two types of Adjectives that also go before the noun:

      1. Before a proper noun eg: Le célèbre Gérard
      2. Numerical Adjectives eg: La première rue

      Grammaire

Replace "-eux", "-eur", or "-oux" with "-se": Swap the ending for "-se" to make it feminine. Examples:-eux: heureux (happy) becomes heureuse (feminine)-eur: trompeur (deceitful) becomes trompeuse (feminine)-oux: jaloux (jealous) becomes jalouse (fem)

Double the ending: If the adjective ends in s, t, l, or n, double the consonant before adding "-e" Examples:s: petit (small) becomes petite (feminine)

l: gentil (kind) becomes gentille (feminine)t: net (clear) becomes nette (feminine) - n: moyen (average) moyenne

Change "-er" to "-ière":premier (first) becomes première (feminine)sincère (sincere) becomes sincère (feminine) - Adjust "-c":"k" sound: blanc (white) becomes blanche (feminine)Swap "-f" for "-ve":actif (active) becomes active (feminine) -

Refer to your French Grammar Booklet for common ADJECTIVES which are completely irregular. Par exemple: beau becomes “belle” vieux becomes “vielle”

          Note

Put the correct ADJECTIVE in front of or after each NOUN and write out the phrase. Remember that ADJECTIVES MUST agree in GENDER and NUMBER:
