Date: 23rd April Country: England Kind of Celebration: cultural and religious - patron saint of England History: Saint George was a Christian Roman soldier, born in 280 A.D. in Turkey. He was persecuted for his faith and was beheaded on 23rd of April of 303 A.D.. The celebration as England's patron saint began in the 15th century, but it's not a public holiday. How is celebrated: parades, Morris dancing, Punch and Judy shows, flags of Saint George's cross, red roses, wearing blue, singing hymn "Jerusalem". Curiosities: In the legend, he killed a dragon and saved a princess. Saint George is also the patron saint of many other countries. It is believed that William Shakespeare was born and died on Saint George's day.
