What is a success coach

A success coach is...

Instructional Support Staff that aid in the virtual classroom, individually, and in a small-group setting. They are a virtual support that can be utilized by both teachers and learners in an effort to achieve academic success.

1:1 Support in the iep

1:1 support in the IEP

It should be written in to the IEP as 1:1 support from CCA Staff so that if a Success Coach is unable to schedule a needed session to meet the learner's needs, it could then be implemented by the Case Manager.

This support should be implemented when class sessions, UDL, and small-group with the teacher are simply not supportive enough for the learner.

Success Coaches will meet with learners who have 1:1 support listed in their IEP.

Teachers may request that success coaches hold small-group meetings or 1:1 meetings (only if absolutely necessary) as instructional support sessions for learners who are requiring additional support to acquire skills in the lesson content or in making progress on IEP goals. The teacher will collaborate with the success coach and communicate when a learner requires this support. Also, the teacher should explain the specific skills the learner needs to work on during the session while also providing any necessary materials.​ The Success Coach will schedule a time to conduct the session that is not during a scheduled class. If the Success Coach is not able to fulfill the request, the Success Coach will work with the Special Education Supervisor to collaborate with other Success Coaches to meet the need.

Planning Ahead

Aligning Schedules

Success Coach will work with the Course Teacher to identify what they will be doing in class during the time that they will be pushing-in to best prepare themselves to support the learners. Teacher should provide materials and strategies as needed.

Course Teacher will communicate with the Success Coach when they are needed based on the availability schedule that they provide to the teacher to ensure that time is not being wasted and the Success Coach can attend to other tasks if they are not needed that day.

Catch-up Plans

Small-group

Success Coaches will support learners who are behind with their coursework by supporting completion of lessons(outlined by their catch-up plan). They may do this using a breakout room to work on missed content before joining the group with the Course Teacher.

While the Course Teacher is reviewing taught information with learners who are struggling to understand, the Success Coach can be working with learners in a breakout room to complete the application activity.

Conversations

Activity Swap

Success Coaches can monitor the chat during instructional sessions and respond as needed. If there is a question a learner has or if a Success Coach feels that the instruction was not clear, he/she may interject and ask the Course Teacher to clarify. This is helpful because oftentimes learners may not ask questions, but this does not mean that they fully understand.

When a project or activity has multiple parts such as a writing prompt, the Course Teacher may work with a small group in a breakout room on one part while the Success Coach works with another small group in a breakout room on another part and then the groups will switch. This takes planning in advance and instruction provided by the Course Teacher to the Success Coach.

Review Lessons

Smaller Groupings

During a review lesson a Course Teacher may go over the content with learners that are still struggling, while simultaneously the Success Coach is meeting with a small group in a breakout room that understands the content and needs to practice more to be challenged and provides them with additional practice prompts supplied by the teacher.

If learners are completing an activity in class, sometimes it can be overwhelming if many (more than 12) learners attend. In this instance, the Course Teacher might provide the instruction and then have the independent practice done in breakout rooms that are monitored by the Teacher and the Success Coach.

Data Tracking

When a Course Teacher is instructing it is hard to keep track of data, such as who is entering and leaving the zoom room, who is participating, gathering behavioral data if needed, and lots of other kinds of data. The Success Coach can gather this data for the Course Teacher during the instructional session to be able to be reviewed afterwards.

Communication is Key.

Remember to communicate with the Success Coaches regularly so that an appropriate plan can be implemented to best meet the learner needs.
