Cascading & Contextualizing Information to Your Team
Would this best be delivered in:
- Slack/Email(easy reference later, audience has time to review at own pace)
- Live (best for 2-way dialogue and times when you’re trying to evoke a significant change in attitude)
- or a combination of the two?
Consider your channel
What will your audience’s posture be going into this and what response do you hope your communication will evoke in them? Use this to determine your tone.
Nail the tone
- Who are they? (be as specific as possible)
- What do they know about this already?
- What else is happening around them that will impact how they receive this news?
Define your audience
Even if you are sharing live, it can help to jot these three buckets down in advance to get your thoughts together. What: Your message in one simple sentence. Try to keep to one sentence by boiling it down to its most basic form. So what: Why you’re sharing this with them/what’s in it for them. Now what: Explicitly spell out the action your audience should take now that they have this information (and just as importantly, what should they not do).
Organize your message
- What’s happening and what do you want your audience to do with this?
- Challenge yourself to push beyond “to inform.” (this is implied)
- Why does this specific audience need to be informed?
