Emphasis Area Courses

Students must select an emphasis area from the following options:

  • River Science
  • River-based Policy and Management
  • River-based Recreation, Education, and Tourism

Students are required to take two courses within their emphasis area of choice.

Professional Experience Requirement

One of the requirements of the RSLC is that “learning must be applied in a professional context”.This may be achieved through a credit-earning internship, paid internship, paid professional experience, independent study or course-related professional experience.

Core Courses

4 courses total

The River Studies and Leadership Certificate is an interdisciplinary program. Students must complete an approved course in each of the following subjects:

  1. Geographic Information Systems (1 course)
  2. River Science (1 course)
  3. River Policy (1 course)
  4. River Safety (1 course)

  • Substitutions may be made with the approval of your advisor.
  • A required number of credit hours is not specified, as they vary between institutions.
  • A “C” or higher is required for all coursework.
  • Each course may only be counted toward fulfillment of one certificate requirement.

Approved Courses at Participating RSLC Institutions

Oral or Written Presentation Requirement

Students are required to share aspects of their river studies with the RMS community by either presenting at the River Management Symposium (or a similar conference) or publishing an article in the RMS Journal, a quarterly publication.
