  • Week-long (Mon-Fri) virtual sector-specific placements in August for SMF students in year 12/S5 (16-17 years old).
  • Students attend employer-led sessions, followed by a multidisciplinary group project that they then present and receive feedback on at the end of the week.
  • Designed for students to gain valuable insight and experience within their sector and practice research, teamwork and public speaking skills.
  • Designed so that every SMF student, regardless of their location, is offered work experience and the opportunity to network with professionals.

Students present their pitch to their peers and professional volunteers and receive feedback to build on. Sessions will include:

Structure

Students are put into multidisciplinary groups and work together on a sector specific project. Sessions will include:

Days 1 & 2:Employer-led sessions

Run the project(3 days)

Design and run the pitch project for students, deliver check-ins, provide feedback for final presentations.

Provide volunteers(2-3 hours)

Provide volunteers to attend the presentations and give professional feedback to students.

Skills session(1-2 hours)

Deliver a 1-2 hour session teaching students a sector-specific skill, or honing a soft skill.

Commercial awareness/ sustainability session(1 hour)

Deliver a virtual session about current events or new developments in the sector/ organisation.

Work opportunities & recruitment session (1 hour)

Deliver a virtual session explaining the different recruitment stages and opportunities in the sector/organisation.

Careers & routes into the sector session(1 hour)

The meetings and sessions will be on Zoom, like standard SMF sessions.
All of the master powerpoints, scripts and registers will be in this folder for you to take and adapt. You'll also find the project plan and a list of tasks and deadlines in here, alongside the employer volunteer details for your session.
A master quiz/ icebreaker template will be available on Mentimeter. Please adapt for your placement

Students will be given a multidisciplinary group project as part of their SMF-led insight. This will involve them working together on a hypothetical issue within their sector, researching and using their own areas of knowledge to create a solution in line with the UN Sustainability Goals. They will prepare a 15 minute pitch presentation to professional volunteers and their peers, persuading them of their proposed solution and presenting their reseach. Below are the problems for each sector:

In this session, we'll introduce the presentations with some quick tips on giving and receiving feedback. Students will then present their projects to the room, and their peers/ volunteers will give feedback.

Increasing students' awareness of the skills they need for their sector from employer-led sessions, building up public speaking, teamwork, and research skills through the multidisciplinary project.

Breaking the ice

An introduction to SMF-Led Insights, timetable & what to expect plus icebreakers. What you'll need: You'll be given a master powerpoint with everything you need for this session. You just need to adapt for your specific Insight Week.

What you'll need: There'll be a Master Powerpoint which you'll adapt for your session. Please include your own tips and advice for research projects- your insight is valuable!

Introducing the Project

lET'S GET RESEARCHING

Students will have been given their project brief prior to the placement, but this session will introduce it and allow some initial discussions. It'll also involve tips for students on how to research and structure their project.

What you'll need: Master Powerpoint you'll adapt for your session

Day 3 Wrap Up

is everything running smoothly?

In this wrap up, you'll check in with groups that things are running smoothly, encourage students to do the group evaluation and run a short session on structuring a presentation.

Day 2 Intro Session

During this intro call, students will do a quick quiz in their teams to spark up some competition and encourage team building. What you'll need: There'll be a master powerpoint that you'll adapt for your insight week, and there'll be a Mentimeter quiz for you to use.

What you'll need to do: You'll need to direct students to the resources on ItsLearning and circulate breakout rooms.

In this session, groups will be put into breakout rooms where they'll need to do their group evaluation, discuss roles (inc. allocated, using structured resources) and plan next steps.

Days 3 & 4

Checking in

On days 3 & 4, you'll only be required to be on the call for the EOD Wrap Up. Students will receive a scheduled post on ItsLearning with everything they need to be doing that day. You can work as normal but please monitor ItsLearning and the WhatsApp group if there are any issues to troubleshoot.

This session will be a quick celebration of students' achievements and will signpost them to resources helping them understand how to make the most of this opportunity in personal statements/ CVs/ interviews.
