Chronological and spacial introduction

The democratic sexennium, also called revolutionary sexennium, was a period of 6 years that took place in the contemporary age in Spain . It began in 1868, with the revolution of september of this year, and ended up in 1874, with the pronouncement of december of this year and it marked the beginning of the Bourbon Restoration.

Introducción

Causes

There were many reases for the war to begin but among them the following were included:

• Economical factors such as the agricultural and financial crisis in the years 1866,1867 and 1868.
• The failure of the progressive and democratic groups, and that the leaders went into exile because of this.
• To remove Isabel II from the throne and give it to someone else.
• The election of a constituent assembly by the universal suffrage.
• The moderate government erosion.

Main characters

- Amadeo I de Saboya

He was the king of the democratic sexenium from 1871 to 1873.

- Arsenio Martínez Campos

Personajes principales

He marked the end of the six-year period and the beginning of the Borboun Restoration by leading the pronouncement of December of 1874.

- General Juan Prim

He was a leader and a memeber of the progressive movement and he was conducting the war ministry.

- Alfonso XII

He was the son of Isabel II and he ascended to the throne after the restoration.

Summary of the event

En resumen, el sexenio democrático fue un periodo corto pero intenso debido a que se produjeron diversos problemas sociales y económicos por motivos como la guerra de Cuba, la tercera guerra carlista y otros más. Además, es la última etapa de la revolución liberal en España.En este periodo se experimentaron los siguientes sucesos:

• la revolución de septiembre de 1868, que fue también llamada "La Gloriosa" o "Septembrina.
• El gobierno provisional(1868-1871): presidido por el general Serrano y con el general Juan Prim como ministro de la guerra. Este gobierno convocó a elecciones a Cortes Sustituyentes por sufragio universal.
• El reinado de Amadeo I de Saboya(1871-1873): las Cortes eligen a Amadeo como rey y este sintió un gran rechazo por lo que su reinado era muy inestable políticamente. Amadeo tuvo que hacer frente a las guerras carlistas y al conflicto de Cuba.
• La primera república (1873-1874): se dividió en la república federal( que interpretó radicalmente el federalismo republicano y supuso la ruptura de España y la creación de cantiones independientes) y la república unitaria( que intentó eliminar cantonalista y la fuerza militar.

• Se da lugar a la Restauración Borbónica.
• Se crea el movimiento cantonalista.
• Surgue la Primera República Española.
• Hubo mucha violencia.
• Separación de la Iglesia y el Estado.
• La supresión del impuesto de consumo.
