Search Operators & Boolean

When researching in a library database, knowing how to use search operators can make finding information faster and more accurate. Here are the key operators to use:

Quotation Marks (" "): Lock it down! If you're looking for a specific phrase like "global warming," put it in quotes. This tells the database to look for those exact words together.AND: Team up your terms! When you want to combine topics, use AND. Searching homework AND tips will find articles that mention both, making your results super relevant.OR: Keep your options open! Use OR when you’re not picky. Searching cats OR dogs will show results that include either or both terms. Great for when you’re exploring!NOT: Kick out the unwanted! Use NOT to exclude words you don’t want in your search. For example, bears NOT sports will avoid results about sports teams.Asterisk (*): The wildcard. Not sure how to spell something or looking for multiple endings? Use an asterisk. Searching optimiz* catches optimize, optimizing, optimization, and more.Parentheses ( ): Combine forces! Use parentheses to group operators and terms for more complex searches. Try (dogs OR cats) AND training to find guides on training either pets.

How to Use the Interactive Guide to the Dewey Decimal Classification System

This tool will help you quickly understand and explore our library's vast range of subjects. Follow these steps to navigate through the system:

Step 1: Explore Major Categories:

You will see a list of major categories, each represented by a three-digit number and a general subject title. For example: 100: Philosophy & Psychology 200: Religion 300: Social Sciences Click on any subject to delve deeper into that category.

Step 2: Dive into Subcategories:

After selecting a major category, you'll be taken to a page that lists more specific areas within that subject. For instance: Clicking on 100: Philosophy & Psychology would show:110: Metaphysics 120: Epistemology And so on... Each of these numbers is also clickable. Select one to get more detailed information about that subcategory

Step 3: Explore Detailed Topics:

When you click on a subcategory, you'll see an even more detailed breakdown of topics within that areaFor instance: Clicking on 160: Logic would show:161: Induction162: Deduction165: Fallacies & sources of errorAnd so on...

How to Use the DDC:
  1. Identify your subject: Decide what topic you’re interested in.
  2. Find the category number: Locate the main category number corresponding to your subject.
  3. Get specific: Look for more exact numbers following the decimal to zero in on your topic.
Example: Want a book on reptiles? Start at 500 (Science), move to 590 (Animals), and zoom into 597 (Reptiles). Tip: Look for the Dewey Decimal number on the book’s spine label to find its exact location on the shelves.

Melvil Dewey

Melvil Dewey was an American librarian and educator who created the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system, which is commonly used in libraries worldwide. Dewey also founded the American Library Association in 1876 and played an important role in the development of library science as a profession. He advocated for educational reforms, including the standardization of spelling and the promotion of the metric system.

Melvil Dewey

However, it is essential to view Melvil Dewey's contributions with a critical eye. His personal conduct, including allegations of mistreating women and discriminating against Jews and others, has led to a reassessment of his impact. This reassessment encourages us to reflect on how we honor his name and legacy in the library community, fostering a more nuanced understanding of his influence on library science and education.
