Thomas Newman was in charge of composing the soundtrack. He stated that the film provoked strong emotions in him even without music, so it was difficult for him to compose pieces that would elevate the scenes without creating distractions.68 The song "Shawshank Redemption", used during Andy's escape from Shawshank, originally featured a motif three-note motif, but Darabont felt it had too many "triumphant flourishes" and asked Newman to reduce it to a single-note motif. Likewise, "So Was Red", performed after Red's release and his subsequent discovery of the stash left to him by his friend, became one of the composer's favorite pieces.
