Our Story

Our Story

"How do you feed a school for $500.00?"

In the summer of 2023, Jeff Spence (president of Mainstay) and I were lamenting about the lack of funding my school was receiving for our “nutrition” program. $500.00 for a school of 260 children in kindergarten to grade 8 is not a lot of money to sustain any kind of sustenance to a growing population that is increasingly “hungry”. My administrative partner at school and I had previously been discussing how we could do hot lunches differently at school since there seemed to be a lot of students who liked ordering meals, but the restaurants we ordered from in the past seemed to be offering smaller meals for an increased price. She and I were not sure what the solution was, but we knew we could come up with something given some time to discuss options. We d iscussed how more and more students need lunches, brown bag (chep) lunches seem to disappear quickly and that we cannot keep up with the amount of food the students are needing for breakfast, snacks, and lunches. We are not a school that receives much funding to support a nutrition program; $500 would only supply $50 worth of food per month.

In talking with Jeff, he could sense my frustration with the lack of funding and the increasing number of students who need basic food in a day. We are not talking extravagant meals, but rather, basic supplies that help feed children breakfast, lunch, or snacks. Jeff decided that through his business, he could provide Holliston with money that we could then use to feed the children. Knowing that this money would help a lot, my administrative partner and I brainstormed how we could best utilize the money Jeff and his business donated. We knew we needed to use the monetary donations, but also utilize the grocery donations from the community and plan meals according to what was in our pantry. Mainstay Meals was brought to life in September, 2023.

SDG 2 is to “end hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” (United Nations Statistics Division Website, 2024, goal 2). Target 2.1: By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round. Indicator 2.1.1: Prevalence of undernourishment. Indicator 2.1.2: Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity in the population, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). Don't forget to give your financial partner a donation receipt

Find a Financial Partner

The first step in the playbook of creating Mainstay Meals is to find a financial partnership. This partnership is important as there will always be a need to purchase food items, kitchen supplies, utensils, spices, and condiments for the hot lunch program. A lump sum donation is preferable to reduce the planning and communication time between the coordinator and the financeer. Check with your school adminstrative assistant for the protocol on how to set up the account and the procedures they would like you to use when items are purchsed. Each school will be different so it is important to know how this will be done in your school. Ensure you are keeping track of meals throughout the year: how many people you have served in total, how many students are utilizing meal cards, and how much of the donation you have spent. You will need this information when planning with your financial partners for subsequent years.

If you are in need of a financial partner, Please contact Mainstay via the Mainstay Meals homepage. We will assist in finding you a partnership.

Hints and Tips

Purchase Ziplock Freezer Bags for leftover food storage. The leftovers can be used for student lunches throughout the week.

Plan your meals around what's in the pantry, donated food, or items close to expiration

Serve meal items such as grilled cheese and hot dogs in paper sandwich bags. These are inexpensive and can be found at wholelsale food stores.

Make food ahead of time and reheat in a slow cooker to reduce the amount of preparation on serving day.

Set up the lunch so it is "grab and go" in assembly-line fashion. Student helpers can assist at each station.

Add cut up veggies, such as carrots and cucumber, to meals. These can be placed into small bags.

Card System: Management

Using a card system is a great way to not only make purchasing lunches easier for familes, but you can also keep track of students who need a lunch provided to them without drawing attention to the student. Utilize this data for your SMART goals to ensure students are using the Mainstay Meals program and to keep track year to year of how many students are being fed. Click on the for more information. Administration Support

Support from your administration is imperative as you will not only need their permission to implement Mainstay Meals, but you may also use them to support with gathering supplies, groceries, or connecting the nutrition coordinator with community supports

SCC

A school and community counsel can provide much support for nutrition programs. From connecting people looking to volunteer to supporting larger meals, the school SCC is often willing to help out.

  • Volunteers can make/serve/clean up meals
  • Connection to people wanting job skills who are new to the country
  • Can incorporate a variety of cultures and foods by utilizing human resources

Student Supports

Students are key to a successful Mainstay Meal program. Students will be able to provide the following supports to a nutrition program.

  • Make and create meals, supervised by a teacher. This can be a part of the fullfillmet of PAA course outcomes.
  • Serve lunch, collect and count money
  • Clean up

Community Supports

Community volunteers can be utilized in many ways. Be open to utilizing human resources in a variety of ways:

  • Strong volunteers could be program coordinators
  • Can make meals for the program, serve, and clean up.
  • Gather supplies and groceries
  • Can have volunteers complete the Food Safe Handling Course. The volunteers can gain useful skills they may be able to use in the workforce

Educational video for children that talks about the second of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The second SDGs is Zero Hunger. Hunger is a physical sensation, indicating the need to eat, but hunger also refers to the lack of basic food for adequate nutrition. It is estimated that more than 800 million people in the world suffer from this situation on a daily basis. For this reason, the United Nations has made ending hunger one of its most important sustainable development goals. Hunger is an international problem, but it mainly affects African and Asian countries. More than 26 million children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition worldwide, meaning that they do not have access to the necessary amount of nutrients to grow healthy and strong. It is important to tackle this problem to ensure a better future and a more dignified life for them. The United Nations has proposed a series of measures to end hunger in the world. One of them, for example, is helping developing countries to improve their food production, so that they become more autonomous and do not depend as much on other countries.

Holliston Community

The land where Holliston now exists was annexed in the period between 1911 and 1919. On a 1913 map of registered subdivisions, the land was divided into several parcels, with names such as Nutana Hill, University Homes, Nutana Park and University Park. The area was not actively developed until after World War II, with home construction at its peak from 1946 until 1970. Holliston School was built in 1956.

In talking with Jeff, he could sense my frustration with the lack of funding and the increasing number of students who need basic food in a day. Grocery Supports

Grocery stores often have products they cannot sell due to expiration dates, dented cans, or items that do not sell well. The items often received from grocery stores are bread products, pre-packed snacks, dry pasta, and canned goods such as tomatos and other vegetables.

  • You will need a designated volunteer to pick up product once every week
  • Make contact with the grocery manager and arrange for items to be donated
  • Local-based stores are best utilized
  • Freeze fresh items to be used at a later date
