The early days

In 1937, Richard and Maurice McDonald, commonly known as Dick and Mac, opened a drive-in restaurant in Monrovia, California.

In 1948 they created the "Speedee Service System", by simplifying their menu to nine items.

They introduced an assembly line process for food preparation, which allowed them to serve high-quality food quickly and efficiently.

Ray Kroc and the Franchise Model

  • In 1954, Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman, visited McDonald's in San Bernardino. He saw the potential to expand this concept nationwide.
  • In 1955, Kroc opened the first McDonald's franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, establishing the McDonald's Corporation.

Expansion and Innovation

  • During the 1960s and 1970s, McDonald's expanded across the United States and internationally.
  • They introduced in the menu items like the Big Mac in 1967, the Egg McMuffin in 1972, and the Happy Meal in 1979.
  • In 1963, the company introduced the Ronald McDonald mascot, which became a beloved symbol for the brand.
