Questions and concepts

There are very few means of transport established in this area, only a few shuttles in low season, two or three times a day. The inhabitants are almost exclusively motorized, without which life would be very complex. There is no train. Cycling, carpooling and hitchhiking are widespread. The closest large towns are Gap (05) and Digne-les-Bains, prefecture of department 04, and it is in these towns that residents travel for administrative procedures, medical appointments or purchases.

Most residents are working people with their children, and retirees. 18-25 year olds go to study in Gap, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence or Marseille and do not always return to the valley. Inspired by the devices of Raymond Depardon, Pierre, Mireille and Grégoire will be filmed in a chest shot, seated, with naturalistic lighting and decor. These interviews will be edited into assumed jumpcuts.

Grégoire set up a WhatsApp carpooling group

Mireille carpools to go to the bridge club with her friends

Pierre, the former mayor of Barcelonnette, tells us about an old train project

Claire, Aloïs

Aliénor participated in the artistic creation of the documentary but also took care of all the administrative procedures, reservations, as well as all the financial and legal aspects.

Baptiste took charge of the writing and development of the documentary. He imagined the characters and the story. He led the interviews and led the technical team.

The image team implemented Baptiste's ideas through the plans, adding their touch of singularity. The challenge was to highlight the road while denouncing its use.

The sound team imagined the entire sound universe of the film, through the atmosphere and the effects. They collaborated with Robin the composer to bring overall coherence to the film.

Shoot in Ubaye Valley

More than 1000km, 4 days of filming, 3 main characters, several secondary characters, a team of 7 students. Rain and shine, cars, few buses, beautiful landscapes and a lot of road.

Challenges

The distance of the shoot was an issue so we had to be very organized. We had to create bonds with our characters despite only one location scouting. The team being new, we focused our efficiency on communication.

Conclusion

Great experience

The bonds we created with the team and the characters kept us moving forward and made all stages of the project enjoyable. It was interesting to get to know this territory of Ubaye whose issues resonate throughout France. Finally, this project was very enriching both personally and professionally.
