Cognitive development milestones Children's cognitive abilities also start to rapidly grow and advance during toddlerhood. They start to grasp fundamental ideas like object permanence and start to learn words. Social-emotional development milestone Children start to develop their social-emotional abilities when they are toddlers. They gain social skills, learn how to communicate their feelings, and become more self-aware.
