What is it and how does it work?
Antibiotics are substances produced by living or laboratory-produced organisms, which can cause the death of bacteria or prevent their growth.
They have made it possible to heal and prevent infectious diseases that only a century ago were often lethal or could result in serious damage of a permanent nature.
Areas of Application
They are prescribed when it is difficult for the infection to heal on its own, thanks to the response of the immune system, or when the healing time is too long or when there is a risk of further problems or pathologies
Classification of Antibiotics
basis of molecule structure and mechanism of action
amount of medication administered
the spectrum of action
- broad-spectrum antibiotics to both gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- narrow spectrum, only on specific bacteria
- bacteriostatics, block growth and facilitate elimination by the host
- bactericidal, cause the death of the parasite.
Contraindications
In the use of antibiotics may occur some collateral aspects such as:
- nausea
- vomiting
- Diarrhea
- bloating.
- abdominal cramps and pains.
- decreased appetite.
- rashes.
The scientist who discovered the antibiotic
In 1928, Alexander Fleming, a Scottish physician, working on some strains of bacteria, observed that a fungus that contaminated one of his cultures had inhibited their growth. Since the mold belonged to the genus Penicillum, Fleming called this antibacterial substance penicillin.
